Veer Gatha 5.0 – Inspiring Young India Through Stories of Bravery

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, have jointly launched Veer Gatha 5.0 (2025-26), a nationwide initiative aimed at instilling patriotism, civic consciousness, and respect for our brave heroes among students. This flagship project has become one of the largest creative engagement programs in India’s education sector.

What is Veer Gatha?

Launched in 2021 under the Gallantry Awards Portal (GAP), Project Veer Gatha provides school students across the country an opportunity to creatively express the stories of gallantry award winners and great Indian warriors. Students participate by writing poems, essays, paragraphs, creating drawings, paintings, short videos, and multimedia projects.

The project has grown immensely:

  • Veer Gatha 1.0 (2021-22): 8 lakh participants
  • Veer Gatha 2.0 (2022-23): 19.5 lakh participants
  • Veer Gatha 3.0 (2023-24): 1.37 crore participants
  • Veer Gatha 4.0 (2024-25): 1.76 crore participants
  • It is now regarded as a revolutionary movement in building national pride among young Indians.

What’s New in Veer Gatha 5.0?

  • Building on the previous successes, Veer Gatha 5.0 introduces:
  • Veer Gatha Corners in every school to showcase student talent.
  • Inclusion of stories of pre-independence warriors like Prithviraj Chauhan, King Kharavela of Kalinga, Chola rulers, and the heroes of 1857.
  • Technology-based activities such as videography, anchoring, and storytelling on themes like Samarik Parampara (military traditions, strategies, wars, and struggles of great rulers and soldiers).
  • Wider outreach through virtual/physical sessions with gallantry awardees.

Categories and Activities

  • Students can participate in the following categories:
  • Preparatory Stage (Classes 3-5): Poems, short paragraphs (150 words), drawings/paintings.
  • Middle Stage (Classes 6-8): Poems, essays (300 words), paintings, short videos, storytelling, reporting.
  • Secondary Stage (Classes 9-12): Essays (750 words), poems, paintings, multimedia presentations, short videos.

Suggested Topics:

  • My role model – Gallantry Award winner.
  • Keeping alive the memory of a brave heart.
  • Military traditions and strategies of Indian warriors.
  • Stories of bravery from freedom struggles and tribal uprisings.

Project Timelines (2025)

  • By 5th Sept: Schools notified about the project.
  • 8th – 30th Sept: School-level activities & interactions with awardees.
  • 1st – 15th Oct: Uploading of best entries on MyGov portal (4 per school).
  • 17th Oct – 10th Nov: District-level evaluations.
  • 12th – 30th Nov: State/UT-level evaluations.
  • 4th – 24th Dec: National-level evaluation.
  • By 30th Dec: Final results shared with MoD.

Winners and Awards

  • National Level (Super 100): 100 winners (Rs.10,000 cash prize each).
  • State/UT Level: 8 winners per state/UT.
  • District Level: 4 winners per district.

National winners will be felicitated jointly by MoE & MoD in Delhi during Republic Day celebrations.

Role of Schools

Every school must:

  • Set up a Veer Gatha Corner.
  • Conduct school-level activities.
  • Upload best entries on the MyGov portal.
  • Encourage interactions with gallantry awardees.
