1. 20th Asian Games 2026 Begin in Aichi-Nagoya
The 20th Asian Games officially begin on 19 September 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The continental sporting event will continue until 4 October 2026. India is participating with a large contingent in the Games.

2. 20th Rozgar Mela to Provide More Than 51,000 Appointment Letters
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in the 20th Rozgar Mela on 19 September 2026. More than 51,000 appointment letters will be distributed to newly appointed youth in various government organisations.
The event is being conducted at 45 locations across the country. The newly recruited candidates will join organisations and departments including Railways, Revenue, Home Affairs, Health & Family Welfare, Financial Services and Defence.

4. India Launches Indigenous Ocean Research Vessel ‘Sagar Manthan’
Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has launched an indigenous ocean research vessel named ‘Sagar Manthan’.
The vessel has been reported to have a project cost of approximately ₹840 crore and is expected to be ready for use by early 2028. The vessel is significant for India's ocean research and maritime scientific capabilities. 3

5. New MDR Framework for Certain UPI Merchant Transactions
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has notified a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework for eligible person-to-merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000. The new framework is scheduled to take effect from 15 October 2026.
The notified MDR for eligible transactions above ₹2,000 is 0.4%, subject to applicable transaction-level limits. The change concerns merchant transactions and should not be confused with a blanket charge on all UPI payments. 4
6. ‘Carpathian Eight’ Summit Hosted by Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hosted the inaugural summit of the “Carpathian Eight”. The grouping includes Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.
The summit is significant from the perspective of European regional cooperation and geopolitics. The European Union was also involved in the meeting. 5

US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law, according to reports available on 19 September 2026.
